How to record your screen

It takes about ten minutes and you do not need to be technical. Here is exactly how.

First, the part that matters most

Do not tidy up first. Do not close tabs, rename things, or fix the bit that has been annoying you for a year. The mess is the information. A cleaned-up version of your setup tells me almost nothing.

You do not need to know how anything works. Saying "I have no idea what this does, my old VA set it up" is one of the most useful sentences you can give me.

It does not need to be one take. Record two or three shorter clips if that is easier. Send them all.

And I never need your logins. Show me on the recording instead. If something cannot be seen on screen, take a photo or a screenshot.

Pick one

Three ways to record, easiest first

1. Komodo, the one I use

A free Chrome extension. You click record, it captures your screen and your voice, and it gives you a link to send me. Nothing to install beyond the extension, no file to upload, no account juggling.

Get Komodo, free

That is an affiliate link, so if you ever move to a paid plan I earn a little. You will not need one for this. I recommend it because it is what I use.

2. Whatever is already on your computer

On Windows: press the Windows key and G together. The Game Bar opens, which sounds odd but records any screen perfectly well. Hit the record button, and make sure the microphone icon is switched on so I can hear you.

On a Mac: press Shift, Command and 5 together. Choose "Record Entire Screen", set Options so the microphone is on, then click Record.

Both save a video file to your computer. Put it in Google Drive or Dropbox and send me the link, and please check the link works for someone who is not signed in as you.

3. Your phone

If your business mostly runs on your phone, record your phone. On an iPhone, add Screen Recording to your Control Centre in Settings. On Android, it is in the quick settings panel. Hold the microphone on so I can hear you.

While you record

What to actually do for ten minutes

Talk me through your business the way you would show a friend. Open things, click around, and say out loud what you are thinking. The narration is half the value, so please do not record in silence.

If you want a running order, this one works:

Start where the money comes in

Open the thing someone buys from, or books through, or signs up on. Walk me through what happens after they click.

Then your email

Show me your email tool. Your lists, your tags if you have them, and any automation you set up once and have not looked at since.

Then the rest of the tabs

Open the tools you use in a normal week. For each one, say what you use it for and whether you are sure you still need it. "I think this one might be doing nothing" is a great answer.

Then the thing you avoid

Open the one you dread. Say why. This is usually where the best part of your Stop List comes from.

Stop at ten minutes

Even mid-sentence. I would rather have ten honest minutes than forty polished ones, and the questionnaire covers anything the recording misses.

When you are done

Paste the link, or upload the file, on the last page of your questionnaire. That is the bit that starts your clock, so nothing is waiting on you until both are in.

If you get stuck on any of this, reply to the email that brought you here and tell me where you got to. Getting the recording made is not a test.
